This bizarre still life was inspired by an artichoke flower. It is a massive stem with delightfully shaped leaves, crowned with a large "head" with its characteristic fleshy petals -- absolutely the most perfect object ever for painting! A bouquet of yellow tulips seemed like a wonderful color addition to the artichoke. I tried to avoid a classic composition and fragmented the space to break up its unity. The objects rather acquire a depth of volume, than appear flat. Shifting the focus of my vision, I seem to be looking at all objects at once, and at the same time not fixing the center of the view on any particular subject. So I wanted to show the beauty of flowers as such, regardless of their location in the environment.
